The town of Gilford lies on the southern side of Lake Winnipesaukee and is home to many various area attractions including Gunstock Ski Mountain, Meadowbrook Farm Performing Arts Pavillion among others. Originally part of the town of Gilmanton, Gilford was incorporated in 1812. The Lake Shore railroad was the catalyst for Gilford becoming a destination in the mid 1800′s. Train service opened much of the Lakes Region to tourism and Gilford was one of those towns that benefitted right from the start. By the early 1900′s Gilford became THE place to go for alpine and cross country skiing. Gunstock has continued to flourish throughout the years and is still on eof the finest ski areas in New Hampshire.

 

Many of the large marinas including Mountain View Yacht Club, Gilford Yacht Club and Silver Sands Marina are located in Gilford. With the large numbers of docks, many boaters keep their boats in Gilford year after year. Governors Island is one of the famous locales in Gilford and is one of the few bridged islands on Lake Winnipesaukee. Governors Island is home to many beautiful waterfront properties and is a great spot to boat and enjoy looking at some of the best real estate in the region. Meadowbrook Performing Arts Pavillion has become one of the best spots in the state to see acts as varied as Willie Nelson to Mariah Carey. Gilford is also well known for their excellent school district both scholastically and athletically.
